The Fab Fit Take:

I’ve spent a few years being a little bit shy about taking dance classes. Recently, something snapped in me – maybe it’s a new lack of shame, who knows. Whatever the change was, I’m finally able to just let go and just have a good time.

That kind of attitude will serve you well in breakdancing class, where you’ll spend the class advancing your b-boy and b-girl skills and practicing a handful of moves throughout class. And if you let yourself, you can actually learn a few things and have a really great time.

In my class we broke the 60-minutes into three sections. First was top-rock, or the more dance-y movements a b-girl does while standing. Everything we did during this top rock phase was aerobic. A few moves we worked on were the Indian step and the skateboarder.

I’ve been doing the Indian Step every time I step in front of a mirror since the class. Here’s how:

I’m going to need some high-tops.

Then we worked the down-rock (also known as footwork) moves, or the moves that focused on having both hands and feet on the floor. The six step is a classic that you’ll recognize from a lot of break dancers’ routines and it takes a lot of strength and coordination. After about 15 minutes of that, I was drenched in sweat.

To finish the class, we worked on some tricks, most beginners worked on variations of freezes. Every trick was an incredible feat of strength and balance. Also, yogis might be able to master these a little bit quicker.

After finishing the final segment of class, this workout was full of cardio and strength. To top it off, it was insanely fun.

Try this class Saturdays at 2 pm.
